Project DescriptionConstruction has commenced on the 6.8 km four-lane divided highway bypass of Tarcutta. Once completed, the preferred option, to the west of Tarcutta, will connect with existing dual carriageways approximately 4 kilometres to the north and 3 kilometres to the south of the town. BenefitsThis project is part of the Australian Government's strategy to duplicate the Hume Highway by 2012. The construction of the Tarcutta bypass along with the planned bypasses of Woomargama and Holbrook will complete the Hume Highway duplication from Sydney-Melbourne.
The project will improve safety, reduce travel times and reduce travel costs for road users. The new dual carriage ways will provide safer overtaking, separating the northbound and southbound traffic streams. It will also improve the traffic conditions within Tarcutta. FundingThe Australian Government has provided $4 million for planning activities and is providing a further $238 million for construction. TimetableConstruction commenced in March 2010 and is expected to be completed in late 2011. |
