Nation Building Program
Since 2008, the Australian Government has committed $60 billion (to 2018-19) towards road and rail infrastructure under the Nation Building Program. Under the first phase of the Nation Building Program (2008-09 to 2013-14) the Australian Government invested $36 billion. The next phase will be rolled out from 2014-15 and will build upon the successes of the first and provide a solid foundation for addressing transport infrastructure needs into the future.
This is unprecedented investment by a Commonwealth Government in land transport.
The Department of Infrastructure and Transport is delivering this investment through a range of road and rail programs and projects across the National Land Transport Network. The network is based on national and inter-regional land transport corridors that are of critical importance to national and regional growth.
There are several components under the Nation Building Program including:
- National Network construction;
- National Network maintenance;
- Roads to Recovery;
- Black Spot;
- Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program;
- Off-Network projects; and
- Boom Gates for Rail Crossings.

As part of the 2013-14 budget the Federal Government has released a preliminary schedule of new projects to be funded and delivered over the five year life of our next Nation Building Program (2014-15 to 2018-19). Details of these projects are available here.
